How To Get A Visa And Stay In Thailand Long Term?

How To Get A Visa And Stay In Thailand Long Term?

Many visitors to Thailand think they receive a 30-day visa upon arrival, but what they actually get is a 30-day exemption stamp. This stamp permits travelers to stay in Thailand for 30 days without needing a visa.

According to the current Thai Immigration Law, those who qualify for a visa exemption stamp can only stay in the country for 90 days within a 180-day period.

To stay in Thailand long-term, you’ll need a visa that fits your purpose — retirement, work, education, investment, or extended tourism.

Here's a breakdown of the main visa options:

1. Business or Work Visa (Non-Immigrant B)

For those working in Thailand or running a business.

Requirements:

  • Valid job offers or registered company sponsorship
  • Work Permit (applied for after entering Thailand)
  • Employer provides documentation

Duration: Initially 90 days, extendable to 1 year with a valid work permit

Requires monthly tax payments, social security, and regular renewals.

2. Education Visa (Non-Immigrant ED)

For studying at a Thai university or certified language school.

Requirements:

  • Enrollment letter from the school
  • Attendance records
  • Proof of payment for the course

Duration: 90 days to 1 year, renewable if you maintain good standing

Some use this for Thai language study or Muay Thai training.

3. Retirement Visa (Non-Immigrant O or OA)

For people aged 50+ who want to live in Thailand without working.

Requirements:

  • Age 50 or older
  • No criminal record
  • Financial proof:
    • THB 800,000 in a Thai bank account (held 2+ months before applying), OR
    • Monthly income of at least THB 65,000, OR
    • A combination of both

Duration: 1 year, renewable

Optional: Get a Multiple Entry or Re-Entry Permit to travel in/out of Thailand without resetting the visa.
